Domaine de Patras, in Solérieux, is a restored Provençal farmhouse at the heart of the Drôme Provençale, halfway between Grignan and Vaison-la-Romaine. Its ochre walls hold the cool, its century-old plane trees form a living vault above the courtyard, and the lavender fields slope gently down toward a stone basin. A setting that barely needs filming — it is enough to listen to it.
The ceremony was held under the great trees, guests seated on pale wooden benches. Dinner stretched into the depths of the night in the paved courtyard, by candlelight, as the cicadas finally gave way to the crickets.
Alyssa grew up in Montélimar, Éric comes from Nîmes. They live in Lyon now but wanted to marry in the South, in a place that looked like the summers of their childhoods. Domaine de Patras, scouted a year earlier on a location trip, settled itself in a single afternoon.
They wanted a slow, Provençal wedding, free of overstatement: a short secular ceremony, a dinner allowed to drift on, children running between the tables, and above all the strong presence of their grandparents — all four still with them.
Ma lecture du jourMy reading of the day
Beaucoup de plans tournés en toute fin d'après-midi, lorsque le soleil frôle les murs et dessine chaque pierre en relief.I filmed alone, with two prime lenses, to stay light and slip between the plane trees without ever breaking the light. Many shots filmed in the very last of the afternoon, when the sun grazes the walls and draws each stone in relief.
The full film runs eight minutes, edited on a breathing rhythm — one long shot, then another, then a stolen image. Nothing spectacular, everything in restraint: the real speed of a summer that refuses to end.
Ma démarche pour ce filmMy approach for this film
To write this film, I rewatched Éric Rohmer's "The Green Ray" several times and reread a few pages of Giono. I was after that very particular light of inland Provence, which gilds without ever flattening, and the suspended rhythm of novels where nothing spectacular happens yet everything matters. I let the song of the cicadas become the metronome of the edit, then slipped a short Erik Satie piano piece underneath — three notes that hold, then fall silent. The soundtrack breathes like the day.
On the family side, I took time to film all four grandparents separately, each with a shot of their own: Alyssa's grandfather closing his eyes during the ceremony, Éric's grandmother adjusting her grandson's boutonnière, the hands catching hold during the cocktail hour. I also let the camera run as Alyssa's five-year-old niece ran between the adults' legs stealing roasted almonds. What stays in the film, in the end, is that tenderness. A summer no one will forget.
